The company was founded in 1946 by brothers Theo and Karl Albrecht and has been financially and legally separate since 1966. The name Aldi is derived from Albrecht Diskont. Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd have contractual business relationships with each other, but they are independently owned and operated.
