The football transfer portal is a system that allows college football players to transfer to other schools during the season or after it ends. The NCAA football transfer portal opened on Tuesday, April 3, 2023, and will remain open until April 30, 2023. During the previous cycle, which began on December 4, 2022, and ended on January 2, 2023, 299 football players entered the transfer portal among the 18 Big Ten schools. Of those, 217 found new homes, 29 withdrew, and two opted for the NFL Draft. The spring window provides teams with an opportunity to shore up any personnel deficiencies for the fall season.
Big Ten teams with the most portal exits include Illinois (916), Indiana (305), Iowa (70), Maryland (14), Michigan (150), Michigan State (31), Minnesota (100), Nebraska (10), Northwestern (10), Ohio State (22), Oregon (13), Penn State (8), Purdue (26), Rutgers (12), UCLA (18), USC (22), Washington (26), and Wisconsin (16).
Expect a second wave of quarterbacks to enter the portal this week or once spring practice concludes. Wisconsin backup Nick Evers and Ohio State's five quarterbacks (Howard, Brown, Kienholz, Sayin, and Noland) are among those to watch.
