A horse is a single species, Equus caballus, with over 200 different breeds. People have created these breeds by mating horses with desirable traits, resulting in variations in appearance and use. Coat colors range from red and black to chestnut, bay, gray, palomino, roan, dun, spotted, and part-colored/pinto. Horses can have white markings on their faces and legs. Horses are measured in hands, with one hand being 4 inches long, and the tallest breeds reaching up to 19 hands high.
