Trader Joe's is a national chain of neighborhood grocery stores committed to providing customers with the best quality products at the best everyday prices. The company, based in Monrovia, California, has over 10,000 employees and specializes in grocery, food, and customer service. Trader Joe's does not offer sales, coupons, or loyalty programs, believing that every customer should have access to the best prices every day.
Recently, Trader Joe's issued a recall for Infinite Herbs organic basil due to a multistate salmonella outbreak. The product was sold in 29 states and Washington, D.C., between February 1 and April 6. There have been 12 reported cases of salmonella infection, one hospitalization, and no deaths. The FDA identified Florida-based Infinite Herbs, LLC, as the supplier of the contaminated basil.
Symptoms of salmonella infection include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps and can lead to serious health complications, including arthritis and long-term conditions. The CDC estimates that salmonella causes about 1.35 million infections, 26,500 hospitalizations, and 420 deaths in the United States every year.
Trader Joe's instructed customers to discard the packaged basil or return it for a full refund. The FDA advises consumers to check their freezers for the recalled basil and not consume it if found. Infections have been reported in Florida, Georgia, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin.
This is not the first time Trader Joe's has issued a recall due to potential salmonella contamination. In March, the company recalled cashews sold in 16 states, and in earlier March, it recalled steamed chicken soup dumplings. No illnesses were reported in the cashew recall, but one illness was reported in the soup dumpling recall.
