Zappos is an American online shoe and clothing retailer based in the United States. It was founded in 1999 by Nick Swinmurn and launched under the domain name Shoesite.com. In July 2009, Amazon acquired Zappos in an all-stock deal worth around $1.2 billion at the time.

Zappos was initially launched as ShoeSite.com in 1999, but the company's name was changed to Zappos in July 1999 after "zapatos", the Spanish word meaning "shoes". The company's headquarters was moved from San Francisco to Henderson, Nevada in 2004.

Under its new ownership, Zappos has continued to operate as an independent entity, with a focus on providing a unique customer experience. The company has expanded its product offerings to include handbags, eyewear, clothing, watches, and kids' merchandise.

As of 2015, Zappos produces "in excess of $2 billion in revenues annually". The company has a strong focus on company culture and employee satisfaction, with a goal of creating a positive work environment for its employees.
